Sorry folks. I am completely between stories right... still geeking about Saturday's pool party in Medford, NJ where Dan Deacon, Deerhunter, and No Age played to a frenzied crowd of hipsters in swimsuits and bare feet. Put up a lengthy post about it on my personal blog Planet Caroline. So I have that party from the past and I have some interesting stuff to write about in the near future. Not much to report right now.

But to tie you over, I will invite for the Snack's party with Dave P. and Adam Sparkles happening tonight at Woody's. No cover. Here's the Facebook invite. Dave says he's going to be playing Ibiza anthems. For those do not know electronic music, you may be unfamiliar with Ibiza, Spain- the club mecca of the world. There you can hear the best, biggest, most exciting house, techno, and trance music around the clock.

I shouldn't be going out on a "school night" but Dave P's music is irresistible to me. A couple of weeks ago, I had an all nighter to hear him spin (along with co-headliners Free Energy & Lemonade) in NYC. If you come out look for me, I am dressed horribly today... shirt with something resembling zebra stripes and black Docker style pants. I don't know what possessed me to wear this, but it's done.

A Day that Will Become Legend

Sorry folks, I'm going to let Phrequency.com speak for me. They have gorgeous pictures and a great description of the Saturday R5 Productions pool party with Deerhunter, Dan Deacon and No Age. Broadzilla DJs filled in between sets and at the end. Click here to relive the mania. 

Maybe 500 gathered at a resort/air strip in Medford NJ. The place was equipped with volleyball court, airplane shaped pool, BBQ, and three killer bands on three stages. The bands played round robin style, which meant one played one song and then everybody ran to the next stage for the next song with the next band. Lots of crowd surfing, moshing, and dancing in the pool. 

I got my glasses knocked off and got flattened on ground while I tried to mosh. It was fun, but I pretty much stayed out of the fray after that. The swimming was great, especially with the hot 90 degree weather. 

Be sure to check out the pictures of guy in the pink Speedo. I think his nickname is Beans, but don't quote me on that. He was extremely funny and affable. He was running around helping Deerhunter sell gear, dancing in the middle of the throng and generally being good natured about the gawking. 

Dance Summer

I've been doing so much dancing lately, that I haven't had time to blog about dancing. As we hit the halfway point of the summer, I am feeling the itch to diversify my dancing options a bit. And this weekend is fantastic for hearing music and moving across the floor. This is only a small sampling of the options. There are other parties that look interesting in Atlantic City and NYC, but I am going to stay close to home this weekend.

In addition to DJs there will be a live broadcast on internet radio station Philly-EDM.com. There will be filming of a dance.philly. promotional music video during the party, so either dress nice or hide from the cameras. (I will be hiding).

This event is a pretty big deal ever since Lounge 125 changed it's format away from house music. Prive now offers a new option to house heads in the city.

DJ's Billy W & Ryan T spinning a mix of disco that sounds quite tasty, including European-based disco aka Italo disco.

For those of you who have not experienced Italo (which is disco music developed after the 1970's in Europe), it's a treat. Although Italo may be an acquired taste. Here's a sampling for you.

This event I heard from a friend of mine in the Philly band British Lit. He wants all of you to know about it and come. This strikes me as the most interesting of the dance/music options for the weekend. And if you don't live in Northeast Philly, this may see like a haul, but really public transportation isn't that bad.





The tip for this party I got from the 51:51 blog. The 51:51 aka FiftyOne:FiftyOne site is an amazing dance party planner for me. Check it out- it has a nice layout and covers a broad range of dance music in Philadelphia.

Well, I'm going to stop now since my fingers are tired and after this weekend, I think all of me is going to be tired. But happy.

As for me, things are busy, but I admit I want to avoid the Welcome America celebration. Cheryl Crow doesn't do much for me. So, other than trying to make the three or four BBQ's I've been invited to, here are some other events I will try to attend.

Spontaneous Dance Party-- The UPDATE

Spontaneous Dance Party

So I did it- went to the spontaneous dance party. I made it out to 22nd and the Ben Franklin Parkway at 1 pm for rehearsal of the spontaneous dance party.

When I arranged about twenty women were practicing the choreography for the five minute dance. A couple of guys did meander in a bit later. Two interns from NPR were there to do a segment on the event for NPR.

In talking with the other participants, many of them didn't know the organizer Laura, but came out because of the Facebook invite.

The spontaneous dance party (SDP) emerged from the viral videos of choreographed dances in Europe done by flash mobs. Laura had attracted the interest of the Philadelphia Visitor's Bureau who decided to film the event to attract people to our city.

The event was choreographed where groups of 5-10 would jump in and join the original three dancers, Laura and her two sisters. There was a PA set up with clips of about 5 different songs.

In all about 50 people were dancing, but several others were at the Art Museum to watch. For me, it was an exhiliarating five minutes. It was a great deal of fun and many of us were chattering afterward.

When more video and pictures become available, I'll post them up. In the meantime, here are my stabs at action photography. The top shot is us practicing and the second shot is the beginning of the dance when only a handful people were doing it.

I'm burning the midnight oil to finish a work assignment and came across this. Tomorrow. The dance moves seem to be more hip-hop than Rocky though. Who's going?

Relaxing by the Airport

This is where I'll be today- at the Making Time pool party in Medford NJ. The resort is the site of an old airfield and therefore, we get to hang out by the airplane shaped pool.

DANCE PARTY PART TWO!!!

This post is a continuation of Dance Party!!! in which I was describing 15 dance spots I wanted to go to this year. As you know, I fizzled out after 5 selections so here are 5 more to keep you going.

Sundae at Schmidt's Piazza: I admit I have not made it to this party yet this summer because frankly I've been exhausted on Sundays. Located in the nearly opened Schmidt's Piazza, its a major happening at Fishtown at 2nd and Germantown Avenue. Clicky for information. Right now I could be at the Sundae afterparty at Vino (on NW side of Piazza), but I am watching a Cold Case rerun instead. Since Cold Case is set in Philadelphia, I'm still doing the One Fine Philly thing. Anyway, for the uninitiated, Sundae is a weekly outdoor dance party, which is kid friendly. After 9 pm, the party moves to Vino and then later to Pure. Catch Sundae before the summer ends.

Silk City at 5th and Spring Garden. Gotta get back there soon. So crowded and fun. I like to go on Saturday nights where they feature 80's music, but pretty much they play a mix of Top 40, R&B, rock, and electro.

Transit at 600 Spring Garden. Transit does not have a web site up, so I never really know if it's still open. As of 4/2009, I've heard word it's still going on. Transit lines up some very strong electronic acts. It's a large multiroom performance space and open until 3:30 am.

Starlight Ballroom at 460 N. 9th Street. I have no good reason for not have been to this performance venue yet. They have a variety of music there and a lot of it sounds really interesting.

Upstairs at Khyber at 56 N. 2nd St. This tiny spot atop the Khyber's bar/performance space hosts several local DJ's. The mix of rock, electro and experimental is interesting and danceable in a strange way.

Subway Dance Party

I admit the details are hazy, but this is what I gathered from a Toronto area, 18 year old, high school student named Nick via his internet tv show...

The group Improv in Toronto based in guess where started an action way back sometime. The action was planned where several dozen people boarded a Toronto subway pretending to be strangers. Wearing iPhones and mp3 players, they gradually started to dance to the astonishment of other passengers. The event was such a success, they have done it at least one more time.

And now they are up to version...um...2.5. Here is the full details on their blog, which they title: the full details. I promise I am going to contact Improv in Toronto to tell them that they are really cool and get the full story. Then I will demonstrate full journalistic integrity and correct the inaccuracies in this blog post.

I sort of interviewed Nick aka nickpoo21 via his Blog.tv show. He was very cranky that I was not from Toronto and not planning to attend the event. But he did have an entertaining planning party on air with music and prizes. There was a lovely young woman named Helen who had a crush on him and obviously went to school with him. She said he had one prize that he would not offer. Ahem.

Nick didn't care one iota that he had a newcomer in his viewing pool. He heaped abuse on me and was quite dismissive, something I'm not used to. I mean, I'm from the Northeast. Philadelphia is riding the drag of the great New York City, which is the greatest city in the universe. I expected him to stop everything and pay attention. When I said I was from Philly he was not impressed and said my city had a population that was smaller than Toronto.

Umm, okay. He's right. (I had to look that up).

I admit I was at a loss for the perfect put down of Toronto because as an entitled American, I knew nothing of his Canadian city. This was a setback in Toronto-Philadelphia relations I admit, but I did tell Nick that I was planning to visit his fair city in the fall (which is true)

But I digress. We were talking about Philadelphia, not Toronto.

I think Philadelphia needs to have a subway dance party. Stay tuned for details.
